The Commando speaks!
The hard man of the Biggest Loser, Steve "The Commando" Willis, talks about just what it takes to take it to the next level...
The first thing that strikes you about The Commando Steve Willis is that he is wise as he is tough. Half expecting something out of Full Metal Jacket it's surprising to find that this ex-Special Forces commando is a lot more stoic than his TV persona would lead us to believe. But don't make the mistake of taking him at face value - he's been there, done that and knows what it takes to step it up.
"In order to achieve what you want, you've got to give it all you've got" says Steve, his voice booming, the echo of an empty room in the background. "What I've learnt during my time, during my journey is that it's about creating yourself, not finding yourself". After 10 years of operational experience training Special Forces soldiers, and also being a real-life commander of the Australian Counter-Terrorist team, the one thing this man knows about is creating oneself into something else entirely. But all change comes with a price, and this is what Steve says is one of the most important aspects of any journey. "You have to be prepared to leave things behind and accept everything that's ahead - whatever that might be. It's only when you've come to accept this are you ready to take it to the next level"
When it comes to the contestants, Steve has his own pick as to who has it, and who doesn't. "I think Bryce has what it takes - if I had to pick one, it'd be Bryce. But really, it's hard to say, as there are several people who are pretty strong. Strength really comes down to one thing: How bad do you want it? At the end of the day, you have to do what you have to do, but you really need to be tough on yourself and be prepared to make sacrifices".
As stoic as he is however, Steve is not without his sense of humour. "The first thing that I think about before the first training session is: Are you ready?" he says in the hardest voice he can muster, which he follows with a hearty chuckle. By no means does this commando take himself too seriously, but neither does he ever lose focus of who he is, and what he's there to do. "Really again, it's about trying to make them want to push through, to find that next level. I believe that your physical state dictates your mental state and vice versa - you need to break through past that emotional barrier and find that next level.
This is one Special Forces commander that's full of surprises, and in the weeks ahead, he's sure to offer more surprises to our contestants. Beware White Hose! The Commando means business - Are YOU ready?
