The Biggest Loser Australia Season Three Exclusive Q and A with Sam- Winner of Biggest Loser 2008

Exclusive Q and A session with the youngest winner ever- Sam!

What exercises will he never do again? What does he plan to do now? What was his motivation to keep going?

How did you feel the moment you were announced as the winner?

You think back to every training session -  your Biggest Loser life flashes before your eyes…every training session, every weigh in, every elimination… and everything comes down to this – it all comes rushing through you. It was a fantastic feeling but all a little overwhelming. One moment you're back stage, then confetti is shooting out from everywhere, then the next moment you're whole family is on stage with you… its like "what's happening?!?"

What do you plan to do when you get back home?
Probably lie down for a day, especially from the past week. I've developed a few injuries in my legs from running. It would be good to just to wake up for the first time in 6 months without having an agenda to follow – having a day where you could do anything.

Besides winning the title of Australia's Biggest Loser, what else do you think you've "won" in this competition?
As corny as it sounds, I feel as though I've won my life back – I've won "a life". At 155 kilos life can be very depressing… you can't do what your friends do, you can't go shopping, you don't feel comfortable, where as now you have that confidence - you do want to go out and ready to start living a life that you couldn't have ever imagined before. You just want to be able to walk down the street and have people not judge you - you just want to be like everyone else.

What was the most memorable moment in the competition?
Again this is going to sound corny, but the Mud Challenge. One round in particular - it was me, Michael versus Bryce and JJ and Garry and Cosi – you know, all the guys had lined up. Michael and I just blitzed them in 9 seconds - it was a pretty good feeling. We had just come off the back of a few losses, I had just got back onto the team… and we didn't even win that challenge, but I remember it was just a fantastic feeling.

It was a lot of fun too, we were just mucking around in the mud afterwards, they had trouble getting us out of the mud – I ended up with a bit of a helmet, Bryce had squished mud all over my head and it had dried – I'm pretty sure if I had been on a motorbike and fell off I'd be pretty safe.

What was your most trying time in the house?
I think it was definitely when I was put in the Red Team. I was really comfortable in the Blue Team, I was with people I really enjoyed hanging with... and when Garry won the Temptation I was thrown into a team of people backstabbing each other, and with a trainer I didn't want – it was hard waking up every morning seeing the others put on their Blue shirts and go training with Shannan. It was like you were thrown bac to the bottom of the hierarchy – everyone's gunning to get you, and you're not team captain anymore... I was pretty much living everyday like it was my last – I was a Blue Team member with a Red Shirt on.

What was your greatest motivation whilst being in the house?
Wanting to change my life, and to make your family proud to know you're healthy and active and so they don't have to worry about you. While you're in the house you think about what your family and friends will say when they see you. And of curse there's always Shannan – he's always there and knows what to say to keep you going.

What do you think is the key to survival in the house?
I think the key to survival is…. Well, you really have to keep your wits about you. When we were split into teams, my main goal was to be really good friends with everyone. We were really lucky with the Blues Team as we were all nice, genuine people, and when the Black Team came they supported us in the Elimination Room, and from that we were able to use it to our advantage – it's was about strength in numbers. When they [Black Team] arrived, we were the ones who welcomed them – the Red Team didn't.

My mind is always ticking over – I've always been a lateral thinker. In a challenge I was always thinking "Okay, well we've got to do this, and that, and this…etc" I had these strategies going in my head. When you know you're in a game situation, you play out all the possible outcomes and scenarios in your head to prepare yourself for what could happen…

What was the worst moment during your time in the house?
The worst moment for me was probably when we were in the Weigh-In Room and Ajay said to Garry that he had to lose 7.1 kilos to send the Blues into the Elimination Room, and he got that 7.1 that he needed. We walked in knowing that one of us had to go – there were only four of us left and Michael ended up going.

When Garry got up on the scales you feel great for him because at the end of the day that's what we're all there for, but it's just crappy to know that it was either myself or Michael going, and that you may just lose one of your closest friends in the house.

Is there any form of exercise you hope to never do again?
Yeah there are a few that I'm not too keen on. Like, I love running so as soon as I rest my injuries I can't wait to get back out there. I also like push ups, and I do look forward to them – but just not burpies!

Are you going to miss the White House? The other contestants? The trainers?
Yeah definitely! Being back home for a few weeks doing it on your own is great, but there's a sense of closure that comes with that – knowing that I'll never be in the White House again. For the last 6 months of my life it's all I've lived – every single story I have now will revolve around my time in the house.

There are so many people out there battling obesity and weight-related illnesses, and quite often its more of an emotional battle than a physical one. What do you say to those people out there who fee trapped in their bodies?
I think the best way to get around it is to just get going. I was the same – I had it in my head that I couldn't lose weight and there's noting I could do about it. But everyone has the ability to do it, everyone just needs to find that motivation. Sometimes you think to yourself that yeah I'll do it tomorrow, or I'll start next week. But you really need to stop putting it off and just get going today. It's like when I was on the front lawns on that first day, I think that was the moment for me where I said to myself "Yes, this is when I start".

If there's one thing you want the whole world to know about you, what would it be?
That I'm no different to anyone else. Like when I used to watch in the past seasons – you see Adro lose 50+ kilos, and you see Chris lose 70+ kilos, you start thinking "I wish I could do that!" But the one thing I want to tell other overweight people is that I am like anyone else – there's an opportunity for everyone. You just need to put in the hard work and have the support as well.

You have legions of fans out there on the Website Forums – is there anything you'd like to say to them?
Really, just thank you!  Have checked out the website and the fan messages and I've found that I love checking it every day. When it gets to the end of the day, and you're sore and unmotivated, I just check the fan messages and I'd get a message like "My daughter watches the show and you've inspired her to lose 5 kilos…" You see something like that and you feel like you can run a marathon after that! It something great to keep you going!
