Before that day, though, there’s a lot of work to be done and a 42km marathon to conquer. The couples will have to compete in the marathon before the finale and for eliminated contestants, this will be the only chance they have to get back in the competition.
To start with, the contestants raced the last 4km of the marathon. Having collapsed, Shannon valiantly rose to his feet, aided by his best mate Chris and trainer Shannan and completed the first 1km. In a sign of things to come, twins Joe and Rick took first place.
Arriving at Camp Biggest Loser, Romi and Allan found the double and nothing bracelets in their room. Allan chose to wear the double bracelet and gave the nothing bling to Shannon.
The first competitive weigh-in saw some fantastic results; Caitlin set a new Biggest Loser record by losing the most weight of any female contestant in one week – 15.2kg. In the men’s corner, David did the same by shedding 16.6kg!
Monday night, and it was time for the couples to endure their first elimination. Phoebe and her aunt Jenni, and husband and wife team Allan and Romi had fallen below the yellow line. Allan and Romi were eliminated and Allan passed the double bracelet onto Caitlin, who was none too happy to have it on her wrist.
The first physical challenge was a doozy. The couples had to dig a dinghy out of the sand on Palm Beach – but first they had to find it! Shannon and Geoff couldn’t compete, so Wayne and Chris teamed up after Wayne saw Chris wasn’t having any luck finding his vessel.
Rick and Joe were the first to dig their dinghy out and carry it to the water. Having rowed out to collect their flag, Rick asked Joe “Where is everybody?” when he returned to shore. It was a good question, with no one close behind and the brothers won the challenge comfortably. Poor Phil eventually had to be towed in, fortunately saving him from winding up in New Zealand.
Faced with the ordeal of speaking to a packed theatre, Lisa's fear of public speaking nearly won out but she took the stage and conquered it. The personal stories of the contestants’ were deeply moving, leaving more than a few audience members in tears (many of whom were Biggest Loser applicants). Michelle summed the contestants’ efforts up with one word – brave.
After some punishing last chance training, the couples were relieved to find there was no yellow line at the next weigh-in and no elimination to follow. Wayne had to take to the scales on his lonesome because Geoff was in hospital, but his loss of 7.6kg cheered him up! Rick took out the title of Biggest Loser for the weigh-in.
All in all, the first two episodes demonstrated this year’s contestants certainly have a lot of heart and more than a little determination!
