At one time you set goals for yourself that seemed impossible, yet after a lot of hard work and overcoming setbacks you’ve finally achieved them.
Congratulations! Now, what comes next?
You’ve learned that your goals were never fixed in concrete. They were always evolving. Think back to the steps in your progress. You really accomplished a set of several smaller goals that added up to bigger ones, and that’s how you got where you are today.
Life is really about a constant quest for improvement. Isn’t it wonderful to have the confidence that you’ll be happier and healthier every day? Of course it is. Yesterday’s goals, once achieved, should become stepping stones to better tomorrows.
You now have a deeper, healthier relationship with your body. Your new lifestyle reflects your better physical condition and way of life. It’s tempting to think you can stop where you are, but that would only be an invitation to going backwards – back towards that person you used to be.
Think about that person. That was someone you wanted to change, and that person is no longer you. You are now capable of achieving more, of reaching bigger goals than you reached before. You’ve proved it.
Think back to the way you felt when the forces of motivation were coursing through you. You were determined to do whatever it took to achieve your goal. Nothing was going to stop you. So don’t stop yourself now!
Look back at the goals you had. Was there a target you didn’t try to reach? This could be a good time to experiment with new goals, particularly ones that you didn’t strive for because at the time they seemed impossible.
Maybe it’s time to change the method you used to reach your goals. For example, if you acquired greater fitness through running this could be a good time to switch your mode of exercise to weight training.
Or change the medium of your exercise. If you’ve spent most of your time at the gym you can switch to the swimming pool and discover new ways to strengthen your muscles while you burn up kilojoules.
Changing something that’s been an important part of reaching your goals can have a remarkably stimulating effect on your life. It will help you discover new goals that can drive you to even greater achievements, while at the same time keeping your hard-won gains intact.
Enjoy the process of setting new goals for yourself. Make it a challenge to come up with goals you haven’t yet tried to reach, then go out and reach them. The more you challenge yourself the sooner you’ll discover that goals are only a means to an end and there’s a lot more you can accomplish.
