Positive thoughts can motivate healthy behaviours, such as eating right and being active, but we all have our down points at one time or another.
Here's how you can stay positive and self-motivated to do your best and complete what you start:
Turn projects into tasks - To make it more manageable, break a big project into little tasks you can take on one at a time. If you are looking to improve your health, start with easy things like taking the stairs at work rather than the lift or eating more vegetables.
Monitor your progress from the start - On a day to day basis it may be hard to see your progress towards better health. Keep good records so you can look at your progress from the very start and have a better chance of realising just how far you've come.
Stay away from misery - It's a mistake to share your troubles with others who are in a similar situation. Either share the satisfaction you've gained from the progress you’ve made or politely excuse yourself. You have better things to do.
Stay around positive people - Spending some time with a family member or friend who impresses you as being positive can be very beneficial and keep your own mind on positive things, especially if they’re someone you see as a role model.
Read or watch something motivational - It could be a favourite book or maybe a good action DVD. Take some time out of your day to enjoy something that makes you energised.
Equip yourself - It's much easier to get motivated if you have the right equipment. This could mean getting a really good pair of running shoes, a home gym or maybe a new bicycle for your morning rides.
Tell yourself you can do it - Try some positive self-talk. Compliment yourself on how well you’re doing and avoid any negative thoughts. Tell yourself that you have the will power and energy to make positive changes in your life.
Reward yourself - Whenever you reach a personal milestone, such as the first time you complete a 10km walk, get something nice for yourself. A new CD or something else that’s just for enjoyment.
We all have our moments of self-doubt, but those who succeed in achieving a healthy lifestyle are the ones who have developed strategies for overcoming their times of negativity.
Learn to recognise when you're feeling de-motivated and do something about it. Positive life changes begin with motivation and soon become part of your lifestyle.
